General PlumbingServices

Not everything is a breakdown. Plenty of plumbing work is planned — a new basin, moving a washing machine, replacing tired pipework, or getting something checked over before it becomes a problem. Tell us what you have in mind and we will look for an available local plumber.

The everyday work plumbers take on

General plumbing covers the ordinary domestic work that keeps a house running: repairs to taps, toilets, wastes and pipework; installing and replacing fixtures; altering pipe runs when a kitchen or bathroom is reorganised; and the maintenance jobs that are cheap now and expensive later.

For planned work it is worth being specific in your enquiry. A plumber pricing a basin swap wants to know whether the pipework is coming out in the same place, whether there is a pedestal or a vanity unit, and whether tiling is involved. The more detail you give, the closer the first price is to the final one.

Typical general plumbing jobs

  • General repairs to taps, toilets, wastes and pipework
  • Plumbing installations — basins, sinks, baths, showers, WCs and outside taps
  • Appliance connections for washing machines and dishwashers
  • Maintenance and checks on pipework, valves and stopcocks
  • Pipework alterations when a kitchen or bathroom is reorganised
  • Replacement fixtures and fittings, including like-for-like swaps
  • Fitting isolation valves so individual items can be shut off
  • Everyday household plumbing problems that do not fit a category

When specialist qualifications are needed

Most domestic plumbing can be carried out by a competent general plumber. Some work cannot, and it is worth knowing where the lines fall before you book anything.

Work that needs a specific qualification

  • Anything involving gas, including boiler repairs, gas cookers and gas fires — appropriately Gas Safe-registered engineers only.
  • Unvented hot water cylinders, which require the relevant competence to install or service.
  • Electrical work, including wiring in an electric shower or immersion heater, which needs a qualified electrician.
  • Work on the public sewer or shared drainage, which involves the water authority.
  • Building work notifiable under the Building Regulations, such as some bathroom alterations.
  • Legionella and commercial water system work, which falls outside ordinary domestic plumbing.

Ask any tradesperson to confirm the specific qualification for your job, and to show you the registration or certificate, before work begins.

How the introduction works

Vofix is a matching service that connects customers with independent local plumbers. The plumber will confirm availability, pricing and the scope of work directly with you before work begins.

We are not the company doing the plumbing, we do not employ the plumbers and we do not set their prices. What we do is take the job description, find someone in the network who covers your postcode and does that kind of work, and put you in touch. It is free to use and you decide whether to go ahead.

Availability varies by area and by day, so attendance is always subject to plumber availability. Vofix does not set or control the prices plumbers charge.

Questions people ask us about this

Can I book a plumber for planned work rather than a breakdown?

Yes, and planned work is often easier to arrange because it does not depend on someone being free the same day. Give a rough idea of timing in your enquiry so we can match it to a plumber’s diary.

Will the plumber supply the fixtures, or should I buy them?

Either can work. Some plumbers prefer to supply so they can stand behind the parts; others are happy to fit what you have chosen. Decide it up front, because it changes the quote and who is responsible if a part is faulty.

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer for my job?

Only if it involves gas — a boiler, a gas cooker, a gas fire or the gas pipework itself. Radiators, water pipes, taps and toilets are ordinary plumbing work. If you are not sure, describe the job and we will point it at the right trade.

Can Vofix help with a bathroom refit?

We can look for a plumber for the plumbing element. A full refit usually also involves tiling, electrics and sometimes plastering, so tell us the whole scope and we will be honest about which parts a plumber will and will not cover.
